Addition/Subtraction Table

| No TrackBacks

Dear Parents,
This is a sample of the addition/subtraction table that we are using in class. I hope the explanation I gave at conferences was clear enough. The children are actually pretty good at this, but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you could have your child do 10 problems a night I think you will be AMAZED at how brilliant he/she is! Have Fun!

Dear Parents,
We wanted to let you know that the A La Carte lunches will be offered on Mondays only. Also, please know that drinks are not included with these lunches. Children may order Pizza ($1.75) or Bosco Sticks ($2.25). Peanut butter and jelly “wafer” sandwiches will be sold in the lunch room for $1.00 and will be available every day in case someone forgets his/her lunch. Since we will be offering this new A La Carte Entrée Program we are asking you to please follow a few rules when ordering:
All orders and money should be sent in an envelope.
The outside of the envelope needs to list the following:
1. “A LA CARTE ORDER”
2. Your child’s name
3. Your child’s room #
4. Item ordered
5. Amount enclosed
* Please only send exact amount due – (too hard to keep track of change)
Also, we wanted to mention a couple more things:
1. Milk is not served on days when we have “Special Lunch.”
2. Children need to bring a snack to school EVERY day.

First Grade Homework

| No TrackBacks

Dear Parents,
I thought I would send a note to let you know what I would like the children to do for homework EVERY night. Don’t worry – it shouldn’t take more than ten or fifteen minutes!
PLEASE be sure to do the following:
1. Practice the word wall words (high frequency) words – each individual word should be written on an index card. Go through the words a few times each night. KEEP all of these together as we will continue to add to them each week. * I may have the children bring these to school at some point so, please do not fall behind with this. You should have the following words as of today:
a, at, and, blue, can, I, look, my, red, see, the, yellow, big, is, little, it, in, have
2. Practice the “touchpoints” on numerals 0-10. Have your child write out the numbers and then add on the touchpoints. Next, they should touch and count each number. If they would like, they can show off and show you their addition skills!
3. Practice the sign language for Aa-Zz. I will be signing words to the children and they will take turns writing the words at the board. Try it at home - the children love to do this.
4. When we begin our Spelling words I will let you know and it would be a good idea to practice these at home also. We will be writing them out in school so, an oral review at home should be fine.
5. Read a bedtime story.
As a parent I realize that sometimes things come up and you don’t have ten or fifteen minutes. Perhaps an older brother or sister could help out. If you find that this is taking longer than fifteen minutes – just stop and on the next night continue where you left off. I certainly do NOT want any burnt out first graders!!!!
You might want to keep this as a reminder as what to practice. If you have misplaced the touchpoints or sign language sheets I sent home earlier PLEASE just send me a note and I can give you another.
Your child and I thank you soooo much for all your help at home!
Sincerely, Mrs. Nancy Fanjoy

Parent Letter

| No TrackBacks

Dear Parents,
Well, we have been in school for a couple of weeks now and we are starting to fall into our new routine. The purpose of this letter is to ask all of you to help us along with this.
It is the school policy that parents have to say goodbye to their children outside of the school building. This truly is for the safety of the children. Adults are NOT to enter the building without going through the office and signing in. Our patrol people do not know all of the parents and to be honest neither do the teachers. So, for one parent to be allowed past and not another because they are not recognized is not fair – AND more importantly not safe!
So, beginning Monday ALL parents will have to say their goodbyes before the children enter the building. We realize that some children are having a hard time saying goodbye, but it really only makes it worse the longer the goodbyes go on.
Thank you sooooo much for your cooperation and understanding with this!
Sincerely,
The First Grade Teachers

Homework Revision

| No TrackBacks

Dear Parents,
Due to the new policy at the office we are not supposed to send homework home when children are sick. Their missed work will be given to them when they return to school. Please know that I will only send home what needs to be done – no busy work! If your child will be out for several days due to an illness – ex. chicken pox – we can make arrangements to send the work with whomever you have listed on the questionnaire.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Nancy Fanjoy

Star of the Week

On Monday of each week we will pick out of a hat for a star of the week. That person will be in charge of stamping journals each day during that week. He/she will also be allowed to bring in an item for show and tell, and a treat to share with the class on the Friday of that week. I am asking that you please send in a wrapped treat – sometimes cupcakes get pretty messy and are often wasted – by the FROSTING FANS!
